Props have been a good tool…
The normal amount of tension that exists between the volunteers and the administration was at a new height this week. 80% of the volunteers were sent away to work at the bar (which supposedly has all profits benefiting the orphanage). In addition to the volunteers that remain being exhausted, the children are more reckless and disobedient from a lack of supervision and attention. A breaking point was when, without notice, they took the generator from Casa to replace the one that was not working at the bar. This results in no electricity and no drinking water. The volunteers were enraged because it was obvious that the children’s needs were not being put first. It’s always the feeling of swimming upstream. Good did come out of the shit situation- The girls thought it was fantastic I filled the bedroom with candles during the nights. We usually have been stretching before bed, but they were much more interested when I used the candles as a prop to reach for and play around. They were much more focused and gave their attention for a longer period of time. The girls interacted really well and I am actually seeing an improvement in flexability with some of the girls. Props have been a good tool to use with them. Yesterday, the use of balloons and bubbles held their interest for hours!!
